Op-Ed: “We Must Help Others Help”

An op-ed by Véronique Cayado and Houda Karaouli on the “caregiver-care recipient” relationship and its ethical implications.

In this op-ed, these two specialists in aging examine the nature of the relationship between caregiver and care recipient, as well as the hierarchical dynamic that was long perceived as legitimate. Today, professionals are encouraged to place the person receiving care and support at the center of decision-making and life planning.

But how can we ensure that this dynamic is reflected in practice if we do not support professionals in distancing themselves from their preconceptions and in understanding the ethical implications of the helping relationship?

At a time when debates on aging and the role of caregivers should be at the forefront of social priorities, this opinion piece offers an ethical and professional perspective on the helping relationship.
